November Pedestrian Collision in Santa Clarita Shows Dangers of Pedestrian Accidents, New California Pedestrian Safety Laws Explained

The November, 2024 injury of a Santa Clarita pedestrian highlights just how dangerous pedestrian accidents in the Santa Clarita area can be, and raises a conversation about the new laws that seek to enhance pedestrian safety that became effective at the beginning of the year in California. According to local news reports, on Sunday, November 17 of last year, a woman, who was not identified by news reports to the public, was injured after she was hit in a lot adjacent to a McDonald’s restaurant in the 23100 block of Valencia Boulevard. The events leading up to the serious pedestrian incident show, prior to the accident, “several people shouting at each other in the parking lot adjacent to the McDonald’s….” The videos, which were circulated on social media after being taken, also show the driver of a white Lexus leaving a parking spot in the parking lot, with the two women still yelling at the driver. The driver of the white Lexus is then filmed driving off and hitting one of the women with the vehicle.
Local Santa Clarita deputies made quick work of tracking down all of the individuals involved in the pedestrian incident. A 53-year-old woman was ultimately arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce great bodily injury. A second suspect believed to be involved in the pedestrian accident was issued a citation by Santa Clarita police officers. As for the pedestrian victim who was injured after being hit by the driver of the white Lexus, there were no reports of a transport to the hospital, and the extent of the victim’s injuries was unknown and not released to the public at the time of recent reports.
New California Law Seeks to Enhance Pedestrian Safety
There is no doubt that in a battle between car versus human, a car will most likely win. As the recent case involving the white Lexus demonstrates, even in a parking lot, not at speed, a person can easily be injured by being hit by a vehicle. The sad truth of the matter is that pedestrian accidents are not all-too-rare in Santa Clarita, and throughout California, and California lawmakers have taken notice. On January 1 of this year, AB 413 went into effect, which “prohibits parking within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk to improve safety by increasing visibility at intersections” in Santa Clarita and throughout California. The law applies to all intersections in the state, even if they are currently unmarked with a red curb, or if there is no parking sign present.
