A horrific fiery propane-truck involved automobile collision ended in the death of one motorist and raises the discussion about the dangers of propane trucks on California roads. According to local news reports, Victor Valley News Group, on Monday, July 15, a head-on collision between a passenger vehicle and a commercial propane truck sent two individuals to the hospital, and one individual died as a result of their injuries.

The fiery blaze is said to have occurred at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, on California’s State Route 247 near Rattlesnake Road, in the area of the community of Lucerne Valley. Though details about the nature of the accident are still sparse as investigators piece together the events surrounding the deadly collision, it appears that the propane truck and the passenger vehicle collided head-on, which caused the propane tanks the truck was carrying to ignite and explode. The propane truck, a commercial Ferrellgas propane truck, became “fully engulfed” in flames, as multiple tanks on the truck exploded due to the impact of the head-on collision. Emergency responders indicated that two of the individuals involved in the tragic accident were transported by ambulance for emergency medical care, but one individual died at the scene. The accident is still under investigation.

Dangers of Propane Trucks on California Roads Highlighted

As the current case demonstrates, propane trucks are especially dangerous when involved in automobile collisions with passenger vehicles on California roads. Commercial propane trucks present the following hazards when on the road with other vehicles:

  • Flammability: as the current case in San Bernardino demonstrates, when propane trucks are involved in automobile accidents, the propane tanks may ignite, causing an explosion;
  • Sheer weight and size: the size and weight of commercial propane vehicles presents a hazard to smaller passenger vehicles on the road;
  • Driver error: propane truck drivers are human, and humans can and do make driving errors. In addition, truck drivers are often subject to tight schedules with long hours, making driver fatigue an additional hazard;
  • Visibility: propane trucks are large machines, and drivers may have difficulty seeing other, smaller vehicles, making an accident more likely to occur.

Of course, there are a number of other serious hazards that come along with driving on the road with propane trucks, and California drivers should be especially careful when driving near propane trucks.
