California Uber Driver will Go to Trial in Car Accident Case, Rights of Survivors of Pedestrian Accidents in California Explained

Driver3

A former Uber driver who is accused of plowing into a crowd of pedestrians has been ordered to stand trial in the criminal case against him. According to local news reports, Mercury News, 47-year-old former Uber driver and Los Angeles resident, Khalid Yagobbi, received the news that he will go to trial for one count of murder, four counts of attempted murder, and four counts of assault with a deadly weapon this week on Monday, July 15. The events that led up to the criminal charges against Mr. Yagobbi happened last October, when Mr. Yagobbi was driving a passenger as a driver for Uber eastbound on Los Angeles’ Shoreline Drive. Mr. Yagobbi is said to have, without warning, veered into the westbound lanes of the road at Chestnut Place, and ran a red light at Aquarium Way, plowing into a group of pedestrians. In the accident, 60-year-old pedestrian Romelia Cuarenta-Aguilar was killed, and a number of other innocent pedestrians were seriously injured. Mr. Yagobbi’s lawyers argued that he hit the pedestrians as a result of suffering from a medical condition that caused him to have seizures. However, prosecutors argued that Mr. Yaggobi’s knowledge of his condition and continued work as an Uber driver was enough to proceed with the criminal charges, and that footage of the accident proved that his actions were intentional. The case is ongoing and whether Mr. Yagobbi will ultimately be convicted of the charges against him remains to be seen.
