Brutal Killing of Father and Daughter in Palmdale Mall Parking Lot Underscores Premises Liability Claims under California Laws

PremLiab

It was almost two years ago this week that a Palmdale woman and her father lost their lives to a vicious and brutal attack in a Palmdale mall parking lot. The harrowing ordeal that the father and daughter pair went through serves as an example of the dangers that may lurk at Palmdale business properties, and brings up an important discussion about the rights and options of injured business patrons under California premises liability laws.

According to local news reports, the fatal mall parking lot attack that took the pair’s lives occurred on Thursday, October 27, 2022. At that time, 22-year-old Makenna Evans and her father, Kenneth Evans, who was in his 60’s, were in the parking lot of a Palmdale Kohl’s store, when a man attacked and killed them. The man is believed by authorities to have been living in the parking lot at the time, and it is said that Mr. Evans may have also been living in the parking lot. However, it was unclear at the time of the senseless killings what exactly transpired, and whether the victims and the perpetrator knew each other. Investigators believe that Mr. Evans was attempting to assist the man that eventually killed him with a problem he was having with his vehicle, when the fatal attack occurred. Makenna Evans was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and Kenneth Evans was taken to the hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries from the attack. An eyewitness to the accident, who had been shopping at the mall when the brutal attack occurred, stated, “I see a lady running, and a guy just stabbing her from behind, from the side of her stomach…He got towards her chest, and then he dropped her. He walks away, like going towards his vehicle, comes back running, stabs her a couple more times in the stomach. And she falls again to the ground…Then he kicks her, walks away, comes back, pulls her hair and drags her.” It is clear from the witnesses account that the killing was very violent. Ultimately, the assailant that killed both the father and his daughter was detained and then officially arrested. The terrible and senseless attack that ended in the death of the father and daughter duo serves as an example of the dangers mall parking lots can present to Palmdale shoppers.
