Tragic Failure to Yield Accident in Levy County, Florida Injures 5 after Splitting Truck in Half

Yield

A serious and nearly-fatal multi-vehicle car accident in Florida hit national headlines last week, just before the weekend. According to local reports, on Friday, February 17, at 3:55 p.m. in the afternoon, a 19-year-old Chiefland, Florida man was driving west on County Road 346 towards U.S. 19 when he approached an intersection in the road. At the same time, a garbage truck was traveling towards the same intersection, heading northbound on U.S. 19. The 19-year-old driver, who was driving a white pickup truck and who was traveling with a 21-year-old female passenger in his vehicle, is said to have “failed to yield to oncoming traffic from the stop sign and entered into the path” of the garbage truck heading northbound. Due to the 19-year-old driver’s failure to yield at the intersection, the garbage truck hit the left side of the pickup. The impact caused the pickup truck to then “split in half with the cab of the truck continuing to travel northwest.” The split-in-half pickup truck was out of control and hit a road painting truck that was in the turn lane of U.S. 19 southbound head-on. As a result of the multiple collisions, the 19-year-old driver of the pickup truck suffered “life-threatening injuries” and the 21-year-old female passenger of the pickup truck also suffered serious injuries. Both were transported from the scene for emergency medical treatment. The driver of the road painting vehicle, who was only 18-years-old, was also taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries. The garbage truck driver and a passenger that was in the garbage truck suffered minor injuries in the accident. Importantly, all of the individuals who were involved in the multi-vehicle accident were wearing their seatbelts when the accident occurred.
