Fatal Fresno Car Accident Involving Semi-Truck Underscores Dangers of Semis on the Road
Tragic news of the death of a Caruthers, California man after being involved in a car accident with a semi-truck shook Fresno last week and underscores the true dangers that semi-trucks pose on the road when involved in collisions with other vehicles. According to local Fox 26 News reports, on Friday morning, March 15, 27-year-old Mario Calderas was driving his SUV northbound on Marks Avenue in Fresno County, when he was killed after failing to stop at a stop sign. At the same time that Calderas was heading northbound on Marks Avenue, a commercial semi-truck was traveling eastbound on Lincoln Avenue, and hit Caldera’s SUV. Calderas is said to have, unfortunately, not been wearing his seatbelt at the time of the impact, and he was thrown from his vehicle after the SUV turned over from the impact of the collision with the semi-truck. Calderas was, tragically, pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The semi-truck careened into a canal and then caught fire, which was extinguished by fire crews that responded to the scene. The semi-truck driver suffered minor injuries in the accident. The accident is still under investigation.
Semi-Trucks and 18-Wheeler Trucks Pose Danger to Small Vehicles in Palmdale
It is clear from the unfortunate accident that claimed Mario Calderas young life that when smaller vehicles are involved in collisions with commercial semi-trucks or 18-wheeler trucks, the results can be disastrous. Semi-trucks and 18-wheeler trucks are extremely heavy machines that can weigh thousands of pounds even when they are not hauling any cargo. In addition, semi-truck drivers may have limited visibility and ability to brake when they are driving. It is, therefore, imperative for Palmdale drivers to be extremely cautious when sharing the road with semi-trucks and 18-wheeler trucks. When in doubt, it is always best to give semi-truck drivers ample room to brake and to avoid semi-truck drivers’ blind spots. Drivers should also avoid cutting-off semi-trucks, and, of course, should avoid any distractions that take away from safe driving on the road.
